Post Moving a computer into my room.
Ok my dad has an HP, fairly new like 1 year old its a desktop. If I put it in my room what am I going to need? There is no way to get connection in my room and nothing has been set up what do I need to do?

You could buy a WiFi router and then a USB or PCI WiFi adapter for the computer.

Or if you have a phone line in your room or close just have a router and have it wired up. Can sometimes be faster and can avoid alot of connectivity issues.
Welcome to the forums by the way!

Are you suggesting running Ethernet over phone lines? I don't think that's possible. Most phone lines don't even have enough wires for that.

The way I see it is that you have two options. Both require you getting a router.

You can either get a wireless router and an adapter for your computer. Or, you can get wired router and 2 powerline networking adapters.

No I meant by connecting up by the Router. I wasn't sure who else uses the computer in their house.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you Carbonite. If you are connecting a computer to the router which is near the router, you must use ethernet cable. If the phone cable has 4 wires in it, you could put the wires into pins 1,2,3, and 6 of an 8P8C connector and it might work over a distance of about 6 inches. :)

Through a upstairs phone line you could connect either a cheap modem or a router and through that connect via ethenet also good for gaming consoles etc.

A word of caution, Wireless can be quite a headache to set up... Encryption and such... Just a small thing to look at if wireless is the choice...

It can be sometimes. If you have some pretty simply hardware. Some come with there own software that searchs for connections, and there normally worse than Windows own.

I use the power adapter like sciguy was talking about and it works like a charm.. it recognizes it as wired so no set up or drivers required.

I don't know if you've already did this but when moving computer into my room here is what I did....

Got some cheap linksys router, to use as a hub basically. Got a 100ft Ethernet cord from newegg. Ran the cable from the router in the other side of the house thru ceiling (into attic) then another hole in my room obviously for the wire to come thru there. Could do the same thing under the house I suppose.

Would take pics but I'm lazy, this method worked for me.

Also you could get a wireless router like some here suggested, but any internet tasks, especially gaming is much better on wired and it's more reliable too.

i ran 100 ft of ethernet cable under the house to a bedroom at the other end of the house to connect directly to the router in the office and it works fine

Just get a wireless router, to attach to wherever your modem is. Try to get a wireless N router, since they have good range and speed.

After that, get a wireless adapter for your computer, that is compatible with wireless N. And that should do it, you have internetz! lol
